Most beginners come to their first class alone, and everyone in the room is learning too.”
Feeling a little nervous is completely normal! Here are a few things that will make your first class easier:
Start where you are!You don’t need strength, flexbility or dance experience- we’ll help you build all three!
Wear shorts. You’ll need the backs of your knees uncovered to grip the pole. Pair with any comfy, fitted top.
Skip the moisturiser! This can make the pole slippery.
Bare feet are perfect. You don’t need heels or special shoes to start.
Arrive 10 minutes early. Get signed in, settled and meet your instructor.
Start with a Beginner Pole class.Either 5 or 10 Week Beginners is the best place to start your pole journey!

Whatever you feel comfortable moving in! Just ensure that you do have shorts or leggings on that can be rolled up above the knee- you will need the skin contact to grip the pole.
Shorts and a singlet/tshirt/crop is a perfect combination, and most beginners classes are done barefeet or in socks.
-
It is recommended as the skin contact will help you access the tricks.
Leggings or track pants are fine if you can roll them up comfortably above the knee!
You are also welcome to wear your longer pants into the studio, and then get changed into shorts just before class or just after your warm up.
-
It’s up to you if you would like to explore dancing in shoes! At Sydney Pole classes, you will warm up in barefeet or socks (for safety!)
It is usual to start learning tricks/technique in barefeet. Shoes are often worn for choreography and specific tricks classes.
Pole dancing shoes are a bonus, not a necessity so it’s entirely up to you if you would like to get some!
-
For your very first class, shorts and a water bottle are enough! But as you progress, you may want the following items in your training bag-
grip - to help you stick to the pole- we sell it at the studios!
shaving cream- another excellent grip aid! Any cheap shaving gel or cream from the supermarket is fine
knee pads- as you start to explore dance more, kneepads are a must to protect your joints! We also sell these in studio- make sure to get grippy ones!
pole dancing shoes- as mentioned above, optional!
You can watch Ruby talk about what to bring here
-
You’ll start with a dance based warmup to get your body moving and your mind in the right headspace.
From there, you'll learn a few beginner pole tricks- you'll be amazed how quickly you get both feet off the ground!
Most classes finish by putting a few moves together into a simple flow or combination, helping you build confidence and start remembering how everything connects.
-
It’s best to arrive 10 minutes early to the studio to get settled and signed in. Make sure to allow time for parking!
Don’t moisturise before class! This will make you more slippy and not grip the pole as well.
If you’re feeling nervous, make sure to chat to your instructor before class starts! They are there to help you and make you feel at ease
-
Of course you can and most people do!
While pole is super fun with a friend, our beginner classes are warm, inviting and uplifting so that you'll be comfortable from day one.
-
